African American composer H.T. (Harry Thacker) Burleigh was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1866. In 1892, he enrolled in the National Conservatory of Music in New York City where he also took a job as assistant to composer Antonin Dvorak. Nettie J. Asberry was a music teacher who was born Nettie J. Craig on July 15, 1865, in Leavenworth, Kansas. She earned a degree from the Kansas State Conservatory of Music and later earned her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. She moved to Seattle in 1890 and relocated to Tacoma in 1893.
